Thermal Management in Small Spaces

## Cooling the Lab: AI Heat vs. Renter Constraints High-density compute generates massive thermal loads. In a small apartment or garage, heat is your primary enemy. ### The Thermal Budget An RTX 4090 training at 450W is essentially a space heater running at 1,500 BTU/hr. Without management, your ambient temperature will rise 10-15°F in an hour. ### 1. Negative Pressure Exhaust If using a server cabinet, install high-static pressure fans at the top and vent directly to a window or an adjacent room. - **Pro Tip:** Use insulated dryer ducting to carry the heat away from your battery bank. ### 2. Undervolting for Efficiency Off-grid power is finite. Undervolting your GPUs can reduce power consumption and heat by 20-30% with only a 5% performance hit. - **Tools:** Use MSI Afterburner (Windows) or Greenwithenvy (Linux) to cap power limits. ### 3. Ambient Sourcing Intake air from the coolest part of the room (usually the floor or a shaded wall). Never let your server "recycle" its own exhaust air.
